4,800 students drop out yearly

ABOUT 4,800 students drop out of, or are expelled from, public institutions of higher learning every year.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Dr Hou Kok Chung said the number was 1.5% of the total annual enrolment since 2005.

However, this percentage was not alarming, he added.

Dr Hou also said that the ministry did not regard the Universities and University Colleges Act as a factor for students dropping out of the institutions. Instead, the reasons were unsatisfactory academic results, inability to enrol for courses, pursuing studies elsewhere, forging qualifications, and disciplinary issues.

Meanwhile, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said that 1,862 students were involved in various crimes last year.

However, the number of students involved in gangsterism for the purpose of extortion and criminal intimidation had declined from 76 in 2007 to only 46 last year.

To combat crime among students, Dr Wee said, the ministry had been intensifying its integrated crime prevention campaign in schools via the Crime Prevention Club.

So far, 6,447 schools nationwide had set up the club, involving 380,369 members, he added. — Bernama

SPM- 1 credit only courses

By: S.Rajeswary

Some high school students would have done extremely well for SPM, whereas others may not have achieved a good grade. Students who did not perform well in SPM should not shut their world as an end to everything. In fact, there are equal opportunities given to them as a second chance. Normally, the requirements for any Diploma programmes in private colleges is at least 3 credits in SPM.

However, Victoria International College is offering students with only 1 credit in SPM to venture into their Certificate courses. As mentioned above, the college is currently running two courses:

a) Certificate in Hotel and Catering Management
b) Certificate in Airlines and Tourism Management

The duration of this course is only for 12 months and with this certificate, students can see a brighter prospect for higher education.

The fee details are as below:

Registration fees - RM200
Course fees - RM7600   1st semester - RM 2600
2nd semester - RM2600
3rd semester - RM2400

For the convenience of students, the college has a good monthly installment payment that sums up to RM560  per month that can be stretched to 14 months. Students who pay fees in full upon commencement of course will be entitled to 5% discount on the course fees.

Unfortunately, this course does ot come under the funds of PTPTN, therefore the burden of payment is on parents. Yet, EPF withdrawals and so on can in this case and the college management would be more than happy to assist.

Therefore, all students should keep in mind that the SPM examination is truly crucial for higher learning as loan offers totally depend on good results. For those who do not have a credit in BM, it is advisable to repeat the July paper immediately so that it is possible to regain loan opportunities.

As the saying, "God will only help those who help themselves."
